Exploring Flagstaff

4-8th graders are you looking for a fun end of the summer trip?  Parents, are you looking for something education and active for your student?  Join Community Schools Outdoors for our summer ending adventure trip to Flagstaff!

Maybe your thinking, Flagstaff, really?  But, I bet you never knew all of fun & adventure you could have!  Our trip itinerary includes a visit to The Lowell Observatory, a hike through lava fields to ancient Indian ruins, a journey into a lava tube, fishing at Mary Lake and more!  Who knew Flagstaff had so much to offer!

Our Adventure Trip runs July 20-24.  A great time to escape the Tucson heat and enjoy the pinelands of Northern Arizona.  We will be tent camping at campground with all the luxuries of home… a hot shower and indoor toilets!  What a treat!

Students will have opportunities to be a leader for the day, teach a lesson on an outdoor survival skill (with a little help from our guides!) and be involved in every aspect of camp life from cooking to cleaning to daily planning and leading hikes!

Our experiential education goals of these programs include teaching them to be problem solvers, inspiring them to be stewards of the environment and increasing their love of the outdoors and physical fitness.  We encourage group discussions, journal writing and reflection time with us and their peers. Community Schools Outdoors strives to make each trip we lead more educational, more comfortable for students and an extremely positive experience to keep them coming back for more!

Mt. Lemmon Bound

Does your 4-8th grader feel like they don't get to enjoy the beautiful mountain range that is right outside our door?  Are they looking for more fun & adventure this summer?

Well, your student needs to join Community Schools Outdoors this summer to feed their need to get outside!  We have two different twists on our Mt. Lemmon Bound Program.

Our first offering this summer, June 8-12, is Mt. Lemmon Bound! CS Outdoors will take day trips up into the Coronado National Forest Monday through Wednesday. During our day trips we will explore a new trail each day, learn outdoor survival skills including knot tying, building a shelter, how to read a map, what to do if you get lost or encounter an animal.

Students will have an opportunity this week to take on a leadership role and help lead a hike, teach a lesson on outdoor skills, create an itinerary for the group or help plan our overnight adventure in the woods!

On Thursday morning we pack up with our camping gear and spend the evening at a campground on Mt. Lemmon.  This is a great opportunity to spend the night outside with their new friends.  We have them set up camp, cook a meal, star gaze, story tell and more!  It is a wonderful group experience and a great introduction to camping and becoming a better outdoors man!

Our other Mt. Lemmon Bound Program this summer, July 6-10, is Geocaching!  This week is all about day trips up the mountain with a treasure hunting twist!  Your student will be immersed in the world of GPS!  We will learn how to program, ready and navigate with a handheld GPS.  We take pride this week in practicing our Leave No Trace Skills by Caching In and Trashing Out.  This camp is a wonderful blend of nature & technology.  Students will find this as another opportunity to take on leadership roles, practice team work and build on their map reading skills.  An overnight camp out on Thursday is also included.

Take advantage of these unique camps this summer with Community Schools Outdoors & Camp Foothills!  Register before May 1 to take advantage of our Early Bird Reward!

Our New Musical: Wicked Cool (replacing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang)

Community Schools has recently partnered with CYT for the summer musical at Camp Foothills. CYT recently performed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in March, so we opted for a change this summer instead of doing Chitty twice. Camp Foothills will now be presenting CYT's own play, Wicked Cool.
Wicked Cool is a CYT original, and is a compilation of song and story lines from popular Broadway shows. Some of the music comes from shows such as Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Sweeny Todd, Chicago, and many more!
While the students learn and rehearse the songs, they will also participate in a variety of clinics and workshops taught by some of Tucson's best-known performers in acting, voice, movement, and improv. The musical is open to students with all levels of experience, from beginning to advanced and for grades 4-11. Performances will be held Friday, June 5th, and Saturday, June 6th at 7:00 PM after two weeks of rehearsals May 26th through June 5th.
If your child is interested in musicals, acting, performing, etc, sign them up for Wicked Cool online at http://cs.cfsd16.org/webreg2 or in person at the district office.
If you love to watch musicals, come see the performances on June 5th and 6th! Tickets will be available to purchase after May 26th.

Adventures in the Grand Circle

4-8th Graders looking for fun, adventure & education this summer?  Want to visit native lands, gorgeous lakes, slot canyons and more?  June 22-26 join Community Schools Outdoors for "Adventures in the Grand Circle"!

Not only will we have a blast, but your student will be able to take on leadership roles, learn to work as a team and learn outdoor skills with us on this or any of our Outdoor Adventure Programs this summer!

Community Schools Outdoors will head up to Page, AZ on Monday and set up our home away from home at a designated campsite on the shores of Lake Powell.  Enjoy views of ancient sandstone, red rock hoodoos and millions of stars at night.

Our journey will take us to Antelope Canyon, Navajo National Monument & the Glen Canyon Dam.  Each place has cultural, historical and ecological significance on the great state of Arizona.

Let's learn a little more about Antelope Canyon today!

The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, which means "the place where water runs through rocks." Lower Antelope Canyon, which we will visit on this trip, is Hazdistazí (advertised as "Hasdestwazi" by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department), or "spiral rock arches."

Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding. Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways eroded away, making the corridors deeper and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic 'flowing' shapes in the rock.

Flooding in the canyon still occurs. A flood occurred on October 30, 2006, that lasted 36 hours, and caused the Tribal Park Authorities to close Lower Antelope Canyon for five months.
The views in Lower Antelope Canyon change constantly as the sun moves across the sky, filtering lights softly across the stone walls. These ever-moving sun angles bounce light back and forth across the narrow canyon’s walls, creating a dazzling display of color, light, and shadow.

Technology Classes at Camp Foothills

Looking for a way to engage your child this summer in Technology based classes? Look no further than your local Camp Foothills. We are working together with the STEM initiative to provide students with camps that will pique the interest of Children in Technology.

Technology classes are especially fun and engaging for students, because they are hands-on and project based. Students will come away from each camp with a better understanding of the problems they are solving because they will be engaging multiple forms of learning, visual, kinesthetic, and auditory.

This summer, we're offering classes in a variety of different areas in Technology that are sure to interest students of all ages: balloon launch, tech camp, zooming dragsters, rocketry, airplane design, egg drop, bee bots, and many more!

Camp Foothills and Tennis at the JCC

Every Summer, Camp Foothills partners with Tennis at the JCC to provide students excellent education in Tennis. Coaches at the JCC will help students work on all aspects of their game, whether it's learning fundamentals or fine tuning their skills.

The kids are also offered a break during their session, where they're allowed to swim, if they so choose. A nice option on those hot summer days!

We provide transportation from and back to the Camp Foothill's location, so that parents of multiple children can drop off at 1 place. Tennis is also a half day option, so children can have the opportunity to participate in afternoon classes at our camp.

Robotics

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) based classes have been on the rise in education, linking education and the current and future workforce together. Because of this, Camp Foothills is dedicated to choosing a camp curriculum that supports the need for STEM based education camps, while making sure it is interesting, fun, and hands on for students. LEGO Robotics has always been a popular way to engage students in STEM programs. LEGO Robotics allows students to work with computers to develop code that moves their robots around.
This year, Camp Foothills has teamed up with Play-Well TEKnologies for our Robotics classes. Play-Well is a program designed to provide LEGO inspired engineering classes and camps for K-8.
Play-Well says of their programs: "Our Core Engineering programs are our biggest “sandbox;” this is the safe space for kids to learn and discover the most through play. It’s about the process, not the result. Themed classes and camps explore imaginative worlds that kids already know and love, such as Star Wars or Ninjago... These programs are broad in theme and draw upon the greatest variety of possible projects."

Here at Camp Foothills, we're excited to see the kids engaged in the programs offered with Play-Well TEKnologies throughout summer. Look through our brochure for opportunities to participate in programs such as LEGO Engineers (week 3), LEGO Minecraft (week 4), LEGO Ninja Engineering (week 8), and more!

We keep our trip enrollment numbers small so our Guides can put a personal touch on every adventure trip. We strive to make sure everyone receives individual attention & supervision!

Everyone on our Outdoors Staff is fun, friendly, helpful, and sincerely interested in making sure that your student has a great time, feels safe and that we light their fire of enthusiasm for outdoor education!

As a parent you can also feel safe sending your student with Guides who have certifications in Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics, Basic Water Rescue, Backpacking & Canyoneering and Food Sanitation.

Summer Hoops Basketball League

Up until now, late afternoon options at Camp Foothills for 2nd through 8th graders have been somewhat limited. While some kids enjoy the 4:00-6:00 time slot by winding down, playing games, socializing with friends and doing art work in the Camp Sunset setting, others want something more stimulating that gives an outlet for physical activity and competition.

Camp Foothills has responded by adding a brand new program this year for basketball enthusiasts. Summer Hoops is a co-ed basketball league that will take place in the later hours of the afternoon for boys and girls grades 2-8 who are interested in joining a team. Practices and games will take place every afternoon from 4:00-6:00 in the CFHS gym. Participants will sign up for a two or three-week session and be placed on a team. Each team will practice and compete in multiple games each week, with tournament-style play to conclude the session. A schedule of game times will be distributed within the first two days of each session, so family and friends can come watch and support their team. Team t-shirts will be provided.

This will be a suitable option for students who love the sport or want to learn more about it. Coaching will be handled by qualified Camp Foothills staff, with the aim of promoting teamwork and good sportsmanship while students develop their skills and enjoy the experience of friendly competition.

Look for Summer Hoops in our Camp Foothills brochure early next month.  See you on the court!

4-8 Grade Class Highlights

“The secret of happiness is variety, but the secret of variety, like the secret of all spices, is knowing when to use it.” Daniel Gilbert

Of the many things to incorporate in your thoughts about summer camp, variety and availability are key. At Camp Foothills, we offer camps to satisfy every interest your 4th through 8th grader may have, while making them available in multiple weeks so that you have your best opportunity to register for the camp your student desires.

Camp sports pique your athlete’s interest? We have coaches from our middle school programs offering camps that specialize in soccer, volleyball, or strength and conditioning. We also have recreational sport camps such as basketball, pillow polo, and floor hockey. Aspiring Artists looking for new outlets? We have wire art, candle making, Pintrest tests,  sewing, drawing painting and clay camps available for any artist to explore new mediums. Our teachers meet students at their levels, whether beginner or experienced to create pieces to be proud of.
